Seven persons are injured and 11 others are yet to be rescued from a mining pit that caved in at Mousie, a gold-bearing area in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), police said.
The injured were taken to the Mahdia Hospital.
A police source said investigators have been dispatched to the scene and have not yet returned with information. Communication signal to that area is very poor.
The incident occurred about 2:30 PM Sunday. Residents in Mahdia say that region has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days now, making mining areas more vulnerable to erosion and pit cave-in due to soil instability.
It takes about two hours from Mowsie to the Mahdia Hospital.
