Sources said the liquefied cocaine was in four rum bottles that were given to him by an East Coast Demerara-based friend to take for another friend in New York.
The passenger, whose name was not released by police authorities, was about to board a Caribbean Airlines flight to New York when he was arrested.
Police later said in a statement that at about 3:25 Sunday morning, anti-narcotics police conducted a search on a baggage of an outgoing passenger at that airport and found 5 kilogrammes 829 gramms of cocaine.
The man has been arrested. Police said he was taken into custody and was assisting in their probe.
