A Brazilian is the latest person to have been killed in one of Guyana’s gold bearing districts during a robbery.Unlike the majority of other robberies in the mining districts in which firearms are used, police said the weapon was a piece of wood.
The Guyana Police Force identified the man Joao De Souza, 57, of Five Miles, Arakaka, North West District. Investigators said he was attacked by a man armed with a piece of wood, during a robbery at the same area where he lived. The incident occurred about 8:30 Wednesday night.
“He was struck about his body by the perpetrator who escaped,” police said. It is unclear what was stolen from him.
De Souza was subsequently taken to the Arakaka Health Centre and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
He succumbed while awaiting transportation at Matthews Ridge Airstrip at about 11:40 Thursday morning.
