Vehicle importer on fraudulent conversion charge

A vehicle importer and real estate agent was Friday arraigned for allegedly fraudulently converting GUY$980,000 to her own use after she failed to supply a minibus.

City Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan placed Winetta Britton GUY$250,000 bail and ordered that she return to court on March 19 for report and statements.

The prosecution’s case is that Britton of 186 South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara committed the offence at Kitty, Georgetown in November 2010 was entrusted with the cash by Penelope Andrews to supply one Toyota Hiace bus.

Police arrested and charged her with converting the almost GUY$1 million to her own use and benefit. The prosecutor said Britton was charged before with the same offence and an arrest warrant was issued for her after she had failed to attend court.

Defence Lawyer, Nigel Hughes told the court that the matter was a civil dispute and that Andrews was cooperating fully with investigators.

Objecting to bail, the prosecution argued that the woman was unlikely to attend the trial and she had previously given a different address- 20 Annandale South, East Coast Demerara.
