Another licensed firearm has ended up in the hands of criminals and the owner has been shot during an armed robbery on Tuesday.
Police said that about 12:25 Tuesday afternoon, 48-year old Fenton Duncan of Roxanne Burnham Gardens and 38-year old Sherry Ramroop of Eccles, East Bank Demerara were at a car wash on Mandela Avenue.
There, they were held up by a man armed with a handgun.
“The perpetrator took away the personal jewellery of the two victims during which Fenton Duncan, who is a licensed firearm holder, retaliated.
He was however shot to his abdomen by the armed man who also took away the firearm and escaped,” police said.
Government has since asked the Firearms Licensing Approval Board to review the Firearms Act and regulations.
In the wake of the misuse of firearms by licensees, government says the time has come when renewal of gun licences should be no longer automatic.
The opposition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), however, feels that government wants to exercise political control over the process. Instead, APNU wants government to allow the Firearms Act to work as the framers had intended.
