The siege of Berbice at the hands of armed bandits continued Monday evening when the owner of a popular trucking service was gunned down and his wife severely chopped in their Corentyne home, according to sources.
A close family associate gave the name of the dead man as Davindra Deodat of 72 Hampshire Squatting Area. He owns “Cool Runnings” trucking service. The trucking service proprietor was shot to his left side chest, left side neck and left forearm and left to die on a sofa in his living room.
His wife, Shaneeza Deodat, sustained a deep chop wound to her head and her father, Rafiq “King” Kapoor, was shot to his right shoulder. Sources said that the limb might have to be amputated.
A bag containing an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery was carted off by the three bandits.
The incident occurred around 6 PM.
A close family associate said at least three shots were fired while the bandits were on Deodat’s premises. While they were fleeing, another shot was fired.
It is believed that the bandits entered the house through a grocery that the family owns on the lower flat.
This is the latest in a spate of deadly robberies to have struck mainly the East Berbice area in recent weeks.
