A murder accused was Sunday night found hanging in his cell in the Georgetown Prison, police said.
Authorities have not definitively said whether the inmate committed suicide or someone killed him.
The dead man has been identified as 26-year old Brian Blunt. His body was found hanging in his cell at about 11:10 Sunday night.
Blunt was accused of the murder of Ernest Persaud between March 10 and 12, 2012. Blunt was charged with the offence almost one year after the incident.
Police had accused Blunt of slitting Persaud’s throat and after accusing him of having a relationship with his wife. Persaud’s body was thrown into the Demerara River.
He last week appeared in the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court for a Preliminary Inquiry.
