Police said they have arrested a taxi driver in connection with the GUY$1 million robbery at the Woodlands Hospital Monday morning.
Investigators said that Accounts Clerk, 47-year old Sattie Persaud was conveying a bag with $1.1M to the Hospital’s Accounts Office when she was held up by a man armed with a firearm who took away the cash and her cell phone and escaped.
“A taxi-driver has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations,” Guyana Police Force spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker said in a statement.
The robbery occurred shortly before 9 AM inside the building near a stairway.
Persaud said she had just left her booth on the upper flat and was taking down a bag with cash when she saw two men.
She told Demerara Waves that she thought that the men were patients until she was accosted and one of them placed his hand over her mouth. They forced her into a room on the lower flat, grabbed the bag and escaped, she said.
Eyewitnesses said one of the men was armed with a gun.
The bandits fled west along a corridor on the lower flat and through the emergency department’s two doors to Carmichael Street.
Investigators and a heavily armed mobile patrol arrived at the hospital more than 30 minutes after the incident. The cashier was among those questioned.
