High Court asked to free policeman in Azruddin Mohamed video leak probe

Mr Ryan Greene

Last Updated on Thursday, 5 November 2026, 4:23 by Written By Denis Chabrol

Mr Ryan Greene

A 20-year old policeman, who is charged in connection with the alleged GY$800,000 sale of police Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) video of a shooting incident, on Wednesday asked the High Court to grant him bail on grounds that the offence is not “serious”.

Constable Ryan Greene was arrested on October 26 and charged on October 30 jointly with Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. His lawyers have filed a separate bail application. They are remanded to prison until November 24.

In court papers seen by Demerara Waves Online News, Randy Greene filed the bail application on behalf of his son, constable Ryan Greene, disagreeing with Sparendaam magistrate Abigail Gibbs that the offence is serious. Through Attorney-at-Lawyer Darren Wade, the senior Greene contended that under the Bail Act, a serious offence is one whose maximum penalty is death or imprisonment for more than five years. He cited the Cybercrime Act stating that the maximum jail term for summary conviction is three years and not more than five years on conviction of the indictable charge.

Dismissing magistrate Gibbs’ reason of interfering with the investigation as another ground for refusing constable Greene bail, the accused man’s father said “a bare assertion that an investigation is continuing does not meet that standard and there is no material on which the court could be satisfied.” Mr Randy Greene also said no evidence was adduced by the prosecution in support of its objection, no witness has been identified whom the defendant is said to be likely to approach, and no witness has been identified by Mr Mohamed who Mr Greene is likely to approach and no item of evidence which he is said to be likely to tamper with evidence.

The elder Greene also said the video footage from the police command centre could not be categorised as national security data because it is publicly available information..

He also said the video recording about a shooting incident outside the Barr Street, Kitty home of police intelligence chief Senior Superintendent Prem Narine on October 12, 2026 is needed to defend Mr Mohamed in related criminal charges-illegal possession of arms and ammunition and discharging of a loaded firearm outside Mr Narine’s home in an attempt to pervert the course of justice because he is a witness in a United States extradition request court hearing

“Should it be found that the Defendant gave the footage to any person, which is not admitted, his action was not unlawful and was justified, and he had lawful excuse or justification, the footage being evidence of matters of grave public concern touching the conduct of agents of the State, and Article 146(1) of the Constitution guaranteeing the freedom “to communicate ideas and information without interference,” his father said in the court papers.
