Guyana’s Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his Eccles, East Bank Demerara residence as police continue their probe into his possession of government surveillance video about two alleged shooting incidents earlier this month.
Head of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Guyana Police Force, Deputy Commissioner Wendell Blanhum confirmed that the businessman turned politician was arrested.
Other sources said the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) leader’s arrest was part of an investigation into alleged corrupt transaction with a 20-year old policeman. The policeman and his mother on Wednesday also remained in police custody, prompting his father to move to the High Court to produce them in court or order their release from custody with or without condition.
The Guyana Police Force alleged that the policeman confessed that he downloaded the video on a flash drive and handed it over to Mr Mohamed in exchange for GY$800,000.
Already, Mr Mohamed, his driver and a videographer are each on GY$750,000 bail on joint charges of being in illegal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of ammunition and attempting to pervert the course of justice by discharging a firearm near the residence of Head of Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine. Mr Narine is a key witness in the court hearing of a request for his extradition to face trial for alleged money laundering, wire fraud and mail fraud linked to his gold trading business. The Opposition Leader’s father, Nazar “Shell” Mohamed is also wanted by the US on the same allegations.
The younger Mohamed released the video recording at a news conference on Monday to dispute Mr Narine’s claim that a gun was fired from the car in which Mr Mohamed and his employees were travelling and where he was seated in the car. The Opposition Leader alleged that Mr Narine fired at his car several times in an assassination attempt late night on October 12. None of the bullets struck any of the occupants but the car was damaged.
Mr Mohamed and his lawyer, Siand Dhurjon, who were at the Kitty Police Station during a search of the car on October 12 said a handgun mysteriously appeared under the accelerator pedal.
