Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed early Tuesday morning alleged that police shot at the vehicle he and others were travelling in, with the intention of killing him and subsequently planted a handgun under the pedal.
Mr Mohamed alleged that police attempted to kill him by shooting at the vehicle thrice. “You all understand the bigger picture. The bigger picture is not the gun what (the named officer) planted where he aimed a firearm at us to kill us. That is the bigger picture. I could have been a dead man and then he won’t have planted any gun in the vehicle,” he said on a Facebook Live on his sister’s Facebook page.
Mr Mohamed, who is also leader of the main opposition We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, accused police of opening five to seven shots on Barr Street, Kitty and then fired again on the vehicle at Vlissengen Road.
His sister feared that the police might have planted a murder weapon in her brother’s vehicle.
The Guyana Police Force did not immediately comment on the incident.
Mr Mohamed said the vehicle was searched earlier and no weapon was found. However, with the aid of a sniffer dog, police allegedly found a handgun, prompting Mr Mohamed, sister and lawyer Siand Dhurjon to accuse police of placing the gun in the vehicle.
“They planted a gun in the vehicle and they searched this vehicle at Vlissengen (Road) and Narine (Head of Special Branch Senior Superintendent Prem Narine) confirmed nothing. All four doors they searched and now they planted a gun in the vehicle,” he said on a Facebook Live on his sister’s page from the Kitty Police Station

Mr Dhurjon added “that (the gun) was not there 10 seconds ago. We were there fir five minutes and there was no gun in this car so I walked away.” The weapon was allegedly found under the accelerator. The lawyer rhetorically asked “how they pressed on the accelerator to drive the car and the gun was found under the accelerator.”
The lawyer alleged that one of the policemen placed the firearm in the car.
Mr Mohamed and one of his employees were subsequently handcuffed.
