President Irfaan Ali shrugged off questions about whether he would consider pardoning the coordinator of the border patrol unit (BPU), Daniel Seeram, after he is sentenced early next month for assaulting his ex-wife causing actual bodily harm.
“I’m not even in that space as yet,” he said when asked by Demerara Waves Online News.
In response to the fact that Guyana’s Constitution provides for clemency, Dr Ali added that “this is a President that has always acted within the confines of the law; I believe in that.”
The president did not respond to the question on whether he would ask Mr Seeram to step down as BPU coordinator, a post to which he was appointed in April 2026.
Mr Seeram, who is remanded to prison pending sentencing on November 2, has since appealed the magistrate’s conviction and a High Court ruling that there was no scope for a judicial review of the magistrate’s decision. Mr Seeram also wants the Guyana Court of Appeal to grant him bail.
He was found guilty of committing the offence on September 11, 2023.
Mr Seeram is a former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) captain and a former Region Four chairman from 2020–2025 on A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) ticket.
