The drivers of fallen shipping container trailer trucks are being charged for faulty loading or unsecured containers, Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Singh said Thursday.
“Some of these people-the dangerous practice which they engage in is what is actually leading to these issues that are occurring. That is to say the unserviceable locks or no locks at all so that is in itself has to do with maintenance of the vehicle,” he said.
Mr Singh confirmed that several drivers of those haulage vehicles had been charged after yet another encountered problems, this time at the corner of Sussex and Lombard Streets, Georgetown.
He said the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act provides for faulty packing of load, in those cases faulty packed shipping containers on the trailers. Mr Singh said drivers could be also be found culpable of poor manoeuvrability by taking too narrow or deep turns, resulting in the capsizing of the containers.
“Even, that is the case, you still would investigate the dangerous or careless driving that led to the trailer capsizing for the faulty packing to see whether the locks or pins were not affixed to the container at the time or not serviceable,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.
The Traffic Chief said, as part of the police force’s education exercises, sensitisation sessions have been held with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shipping Association of Guyana, and operators of the shipping container trailers. He said notices were also placed in the newspapers and social media.
