Guyana has imposed a ban on bananas being produced in Suriname because this country has sufficient of the fruit to satisfy local demand, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said Wednesday.
“I have heard that bananas are coming. I told them to stop all the importation of bananas because our farmers have enough bananas to supply the system,” he told Demerara Waves Online News.
Mr Mustapha said he had received unofficial complaints from a number of persons, even as he said no bananas were being imported officially from Suriname. “We have enough bananas in the country,” he said.
He said the decision to clamp down on Surinamese bananas is in keeping with a policy that once Guyana is producing sufficient of any fruit to satisfy local demand, they must not be imported.
