As Guyana launched Agriculture Month 2026, government said Guyanese would begin getting cheaper fruits and vegetables at weekly farmers’ markets beginning Wednesday at 3 PM.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the first farmers’ market would begin at 3 PM at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, Greater Georgetown.
“You are invited to go there and you would have very cheap products and we’ll have farmers’ markets right across the country every month in various regions so this will be a regular feature,” he said.
In an address to launch Agriculture Month, observed annually in October, he indicated that there would be farmers’ markets across the country. Mr Mustapha indicated that the aim is to cut out middlemen who have been buying vegetables and fruits at low prices and reselling at exorbitant prices to consumers. “We are producing a lot of food, Farmers are early in the field and late in the evening they are still in the field but sometimes they are not getting the kind of reward that they have to get and the people, who don’t do anything, are reaping the reward. We must now allow the farmers to get their benefits, to get their rewards,” he said.
President Irfaan Ali had weeks ago first floated the idea of holding farmers’ markets in order to cushion the impact of rising cost of living.
The Agriculture Minister also said on Wednesday that construction of the national food hub at Yarrowkabra, Linden-Soesdyke Highway was continuing apace in partnership with the American company, Blumberg Grain, to further strengthen Guyana as a “reliable” food supplier to regional and international markets.
