Two persons, who were allegedly illegally trading in gold, have been been arrested at Tamakay Landing (Region Seven – Cuyuni/Mazaruni) and GY$6 million and about two ounces of gold have been seized, the Ministry of Natural Resources said Monday night.
The ministry said the operation, which was conducted by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission’s enforcement team on Monday, resulted in the suspension of operations of a shop at Tamakay Landing in the Mazaruni mining district.
“The shop was found trading gold without the required approvals and licences,” the ministry said in a statement.
During its inspection, the team also seized unspecified equipment and two persons were arrested by police, the ministry also said.
“This action forms part of the ministry’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining and related activities, with monitoring and enforcement operations continuing across all mining districts,” the ministry said.
The ministry urged all stakeholders to ensure that their operations comply with the laws and licensing requirements governing the mining sector.
