Heart surgeries for 40 children begin this month – Ali

President Irfaan Ali (centre) flanked by Chief Executive Officer of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation Robbie Rambarran (2nd from left) and Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony (2nd from right) and other officials as they met with parents of children who are to undergo surgery for congenital heart defects.

President Irfaan Ali Saturday evening said the first group of children with congenital heart defects would undergo surgery later this month.

He said Apollo Health Systems of India to conduct 17 surgeries for children with congenital heart defects between September 28 and October 2.

Following that five-day mission, he said government would facilitate another mission in December when 10 additional children will benefit from surgery.

Dr Ali said his government was putting all systems in place to address the remaining cases by the first quarter of 2027.

The president’s announcement on Facebook came hours after he hosted the parents of children who would soon undergo life-saving heart surgeries in Guyana.

He said the government would also provide transportation for all of the children and accommodation for those travelling from outside Georgetown during the upcoming mission.
