Guyana-Suriname ferry service suspended

The MV Canawaima

Last Updated on Friday, 28 August 2026, 7:35 by Denis Chabrol

The MV Canawaima ferry will today- Friday- resume operations across the Corentyne River after the ban was lifted by the Maritime Authority of Suriname, government here said.

“Following successful technical inspections and adherence of specific requirements of the Maritime Authority of Suriname (MAS), the ferry service will resume operations as of today, August 28, 2026.

The Guyana government said the service between Guyana and Suriname would continue according to its regular schedule. “The top priority today will be transporting stranded passengers,” the Guyana government said.

Recognizing the importance of this link between the two countries, the Guyana government said its  “representatives worked tirelessly over the past several days with its Surinamese counterparts to ensure all safety and structural compliance were met so the ferry can return to service at the soonest possible time.”

The Guyana government said the MV Canawaima would eventually be taken into drydock after a replacement vessel is found. “During this period, Guyana and Suriname will continue discussions for the subsequent drydocking of the M.V. Canawaima and a replacement vessel to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted flow of the ferry service,” government said.
