Co-op society lands to be regularised for housing shortly- Attorney General

Lands formerly leased to a cooperative society in Melanie Damishana- Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara are to be regularised for housing purposes and land titles issued to occupants in the coming weeks, Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall said Thursday.

“Within two weeks’ time, we are on the ground to address the matter comprehensively and conclusively so, all the co-op issues in relation to that matter will come to an end,” he told a community consultation on model villages held at the Melanie Damishana Nursery School.

In response to questions raised during the question-and-answer segment, Mr Nandlall explained that the cooperative society lands regularisation process suffered a setback after then Chief Executive Officer of the Central Housing and Planning Authority, Sherwin Greaves left the job. 

The Legal Affairs Minister reminded that residents of the adjoining communities were aware that the regularisation of dozens of properties that persons were living on had begun some time ago.

At several meetings, he said government had already agreed to give title to all persons who are occupying the homestead. Since then, he said an occupational survey an occupational survey had been completed for the next step of issuing the transport. 

Mr Nandlall said after meetings with the minister of cooperatives Keoma Griffith and and housing minister Collin Croal, the latter has assigned him another person from the housing ministry.

One of the residents told the meeting presided over by President Irfaan Ali that residents of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara wanted to know when they would be receiving their transport. The resident said he had been going house-to-house urge fellow residents to begin paying rates and taxes.
