President Irfaan Ali on Wednesday announced that specialised baggage scanners would soon be installed at Guyana’s airports to facilitate self-declaration of baggage.
He warned that persons making false declarations would face hefty fines for first and second offences after which they would be jailed.
“Every bag will be scanned,” he told the opening of the Guyana Police Force annual officers conference.
He said the new system of self-declaration would avoid passengers blaming airport officials. “You don’t have to blame a customs officer anymore. You don’t have to blame an immigration officer anymore,” he said.
The President also said there needs to be an urgent meeting of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.
Among the issues that are likely to be on the agenda is the integration police e-case filing and e-case management through the legal courts system.
