A man died and another was injured after they were stung by bees on Wednesday morning at Enterprise backlands, East Coast Demerara, police said.
Lennox “Mikey” Luke, 67, and construction worker Selwyn Dean, 29, are both from Kitty, Greater Georgetown.
Police were told that between 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., Luke, who was the owner of a plot of land, went there in the company of Deane to clean up and erect a fence.
“While work was ongoing, a large swarm of bees emerged and attacked the two men. In an attempt to escape, Selwyn ran forward, and Luke ran backwards and fell to the ground, where he was attacked by the swarm of bees. Selwyn ran away after sustaining a few bee stings,” the Guyana Police Force said.
The emergency medical technician (EMT) service was contacted, and along with NARI (National Agricultural Research and Extension institute) personnel, arrived and ‘smoked’ the area.
With the assistance of public-spirited citizens, they managed to put Luke in a motor lorry, GAD 5904.
Luke was escorted in an unconscious state to the Enmore Regional Hospital.
After receiving treatment at about 11:20 hours, he was pronounced dead, police said.
Marks were seen on his back, forearm, and the back of his head. The body is at the Jerricks Funeral Home, awaiting an autopsy.
The scene was photographed and statements were taken as investigations continue.
