The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has told police to conduct further investigations into an allegation that two policemen demanded money from an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), police said on Monday.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said further investigations were ongoing following allegations against an inspector and a junior rank of the Narcotics Branch who were stationed at the CJIA.
The members of the GPF allegedly received money from a female passenger on September 27th, 2025, to allow her to travel with frozen food.
Police said the GPF’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) of the investigated the complaint and prepared a file, which was submitted to the DPP.
“The police have since received legal advice, and further investigation is currently underway,” the force added.
The law enforcement agency said both ranks have since been transferred from the CJIA to the Tactical Services Unit pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Guyana government has since instructed that all police stationed at airports and border ports wear body cameras.
Shortly after the incident, police had said that closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and other evidence supported the passenger’s claim.
