The United States (US)-headquartered LINDSAYCA will be hiring an additional 100 persons over the next 30 days to continue the construction of the 300 megawatt gas-to-energy plant at Wales, West Bank Demerara, even as the company prepares to install the first gas turbine on Tuesday.
“Within the next 30 days, an additional 100 staff will be engaged, and the concrete pouring of the remaining turbine foundations will be completed,” President Irfaan Ali said on his official Facebook account.
Demerara Waves Online News was reliably informed that the generating facility will have four 57 megawatt turbines totalling 228 megawatts along with another two steam turbines for the 72 megawatts under the combined cycle.
Based on a briefing Monday morning by the Head of the gas to energy (GTE) task force, Winston Brassington, Dr Ali said more than 300 persons are currently employed on the project. Mr Brassington reportedly told the Guyanese leader that pouring of the first gas turbine foundation would take place on Tuesday night, September 9.
Phase one of the US$759 million project that covers the 300 megawatt combined cycle and the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) facilities.
No mention was made about whether there has been yet another shift in the deadline for the project touted as one that will see Guyanese paying 50 percent less for electricity.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips had told the National Assembly that the gas-to-energy project would be completed by April-June, 2026.
When approached by the media on Monday afternoon after he was sworn in, Mr Phillips refused to be interviewed, instead saying he was busy taking pictures. He was specifically asked about the gas-t0-shore project and he also declined to answer.
The Prime Minister featured prominently on the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) election campaign rallies and meetings but scarcely provided any information or details about his portfolio responsibilities.
President Ali was told by Mr Brassington that seven submissions had been received for phase two, which envisions a second 300 megawatt power plant and another natural gas liquids facility. Mr Brassington reportedly said discussions were underway to finalise the pre-qualified firms before moving immediately to Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) and financing arrangements.
The President said he was also briefed on the Wales Industrial Zone, where an updated map outlining existing and proposed energy infrastructure has been prepared, with land designated for a data centre, ammonia/urea plant, and glass factory.
Additionally, in relation to the 20 thousand cubic feet per day (MCFD) of gas to be allocated for a fertiliser plant capable of producing 300 tonnes per year (TPY) of urea, Dr Ali said it was agreed that “discussions will be advanced with both international and local firms that have expressed interest.”
In late July, LNDCH4 Guyana announced that the company was operating under the name LINDSAYCA Guyana Inc (LND) following an internal restructuring that has strengthened the company’s technical and operational capabilities through the onboarding of highly qualified professionals. This organizational evolution enhances LINDSAYCA’s ability to deliver the project with the highest standards of quality, safety, and compliance, without impacting the established schedule.
