Thousands of students across Guyana will be able to sign up for CXC examinations free of cost from this year, President Irfaan Ali announced on Wednesday.

He said government would cover the cost for each student to sit eight subjects.

“With effect this year’s CXC the government is going to pay in full” CXC fees for thousands of students in public and private schools, he said. The President said that is expected to cost the Treasury GY$700 million.

The announcement was made at a community public meeting held at the West Demerara Secondary School.

The meetings are being held by the government to talk up its promises and achievements as Guyana edges closer to a general election date. The Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) is preparing to hold elections by the earliest possible date of September 2, 2025.
