Official information is sketchy, but several sources confirmed that the mishap occurred.

At least six were transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment to broken limbs and severe head injuries. There were no reported deaths.

“The students’ injuries ranged from trauma to the head to non-life-threatening injuries to the neck and the lower parts of their bodies,” the Ministr of Public Health said in a statement.

The children were travelling in two minibuses.

The Health Ministry said the students’ injuries ranged from trauma to the head to non-life-threatening injuries to the neck and the lower parts of their bodies.

Dr Balram Doodnauth, Director (ag) of the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Unit of the GPHC was quoted as assuring that all the necessary care and treatment were administered by the hospital’s staff.

The youngest of the injured is only three years old.

According to information from the GPHC, the sole referral institution in Guyana, and a parent of one of the injured students, the accident occurred when a vehicle slammed into the bus transporting them to school causing it to turn turtle several times.

According to a nurse attached to the A&E at the Mahaicony Hospital, the students were on their way to Dr Rohan Private School when the accident occurred.

Teachers and other students in the vehicle escaped with minor injuries and were treated at the Mahaicony Hospital and sent away, the Health Ministry said
