A day after government announced that police were probing a reported plot to assassinate President David Granger, the Guyana Police Force on Friday rubbished a media report that senior ranks were part of a plan to kill the Guyanese leader.

“This false and malicious accusation levelled against members of the Force is designed to tarnish the good reputation of the Organisation,” the police force said in a statement.

The police force threatened to take media houses to court that peddle such information. “The Police Force cautioned the media against making such dangerous statements against its members, failing which legal action will be taken against those responsible.”

The Guyana Police Force noted that MTV News Update Ch. 65 reported that that senior ranks of the  force were involved in a plot to kill Granger and further intends to air such on its newscast tonight. MTV News Update Channel 65 is closely aligned to the opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

“Third Vice President and Minister of Public Security Hon. Khemraj Ramjattan said that Government is fully aware of all of the circumstances surrounding the issue at hand and is also convinced that no such evidence exists against members of the Force,” the police force added in its statement.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon on Thursday confirmed that law enforcement agents were probing a report that someone was desirous of shooting the President.
