The Guyana government has decided to establish a broad-based think tank on border maters, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said Thursday.

He said the National Border Institute would conduct research on the maintenance and preservation of the integrity of Guyana's land, air space and continental shelf.

"The Border Institute is the repository of all documents, maps and charts that has to do with all territorial issues," he said.

Harmon said the conditions of the documents are in "deplorable" condition due to poor storage.

The Board of Directors of the National Border Institute would be initially chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge.  Other board members are to be drawn from the Guyana Defence Force, Attorney General's Chambers, Maritime Administration of Guyana, National Archives, University of Guyana, Guyana Civil Aviation Authority and the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission.

Former Guyana Ambassador to Venezuela Odeen Ishmael and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rudy Insanally are among forner envoys to be part of the think tank.
