An identification parade by ranks of the Guyana Police Force has led to the apprehension of the prime suspect in the murder of Timehri mechanic, Puranand ‘Andrew’ Baljit, a senior police source has confirmed.

The suspect, whose girlfriend was taken into custody on Saturday, was reportedly apprehended on the seawall on Saturday evening. He is said to be in police custody assisting with the investigations.

On Thursday last, 23-year old Baljit was found murdered in his bedroom at his  57 Timehri Public Road, East Bank Demerara. Police are treating the incident as a robbery-murder.

Investigators discovered the dead man with several stab wounds about his body, mainly to the chest and shoulder.

A 12-inch knife was also found on the room’s window ledge, but the police have since said that this was not the weapon used to carry out the gruesome act.

In addition to that, detectives on Friday found a pink mobile phone at the murder scene.

The now dead man’s father, Harichand Baljit, told investigators that he heard screams emerging from his son’s room on Thursday evening. He revealed that he immediately rushed to the boy’s bedroom door but it was locked. He then decided to climb through his son’s bedroom window and discovered the young man lying in a pool of blood.

Andrew was then taken to the East Bank Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators began combing the scene and the surrounding environs on Friday for evidence. Footprints were found along a track running adjacent to the house leading to the public road.

According to the source, strands of female hair were also found in the mechanic’s bedroom.

Police believe that Andrew was grabbed by his head while sitting next to the window in his room. They are of the view that he was then stabbed about the body, after which the perpetrators made good their escape. They are convinced that those responsible for the murder escaped on foot via the track they later discovered.
