President David Granger has out rightly dismissed a call from the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to relieve Vice President Khemraj Ramjattan of his duties as Public Security Minister.

PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee on Monday condemned the Government for last week’s prison riot saying that the hierarchy of the security sector should be fired.

“The Granger administration stands condemned. Heads must roll for this unforgiveable and unforgettably episode in the hierarchy of the Security Sector,” Rohee said.

Questioned about this on Tuesday, Granger declared that Rohee is the “least qualified” to speak on the matter since as a former Home Affairs Minister he had nine years to ensure the situation did not reach such a level.

“Of all the persons who have made comments…I think the former Minister of Home Affairs is the least qualified because he had the best opportunity to prevent what we saw last week,” said the Head of State.

Labelling, Rohee’s concerns as absurd, Granger indicated that the Public Security Minister is working to remedy the situation at Guyana’s penal facilities.

“Well its quite absurd because Minister Ramjattan is trying to clean up the messes we inherited nine months ago and the former Minister was the Minister of Home affairs for nine years and he never did the things he’s talking about now,” Granger declared.

The President was emphatic that the administration cannot be expected to remedy all of the faults in the security sector in such sort period of time.

“So I don’t know how he can expect us in nine months to clean up the mess he encouraged for nine years…many of these recommendations he failed to implement,” the President said adding “we are working assiduously to put these changes in place.” (Jomo Brusheildon Paul)
