Three-vehicle accident leaves one dead, several injured

One person was killed and several others were injured in a three-vehicle smash-up on the Sparendaam Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Preliminary information received is that a minibus, BPP 6074, and car, PTT 9788, were travelling in a westerly direction when the mishap occurred.  The bus and car drivers were arrested.

Dead is 45-year old Patricia Mitchell. Her home address was not immediately available.

sparen bikeThe other passengers in the bus were rushed to the Georgetown Hospital and were treated and sent away. No one in the car was injured, police said.

Investigators were told that the accident occurred as the bus was moving from the southern lane to the northern lane.  The right side rear wheel of the bus struck the left side front wheel of the car and the bus collided with a parked truck.

Fire fighters rushed to the scene and rescued the passengers.

About one hour later, fire fighters extinguished a blaze that destroyed a motorcycle opposite the scene of the vehicular accident. The cyclist escaped unhurt.
