Nine persons will not be having a Merry Christmas this year as fire early Sunday morning destroyed a house at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

Sources say investigators believe the fire was caused by children playing with matches.

The blaze occurred at 99 Lusignan Pasture at a house owned by United States-based Nadira Balram. Four adults and five children, who are members of two families, were rendered homeless.

The names of the persons who lived there are Patrick Sebastian, his wife Sushma, Steffi Sebastian, Kathlyn Sebastian and Tiffany Sebastian.

The members of the other family are Vishal Permaul, his wife Devi and their children Priya and Aaron.

The fire at Lusignan is the second reported in as many days; the first one having been at North Ruimveldt Squatting Area, Georgetown. Four persons are now homeless as a result of that fire.

Authorities said a six  year old boy, who was left at home alone, lit a mattress. Nearby residents forced their way into the house and rescued him.
