Female detective sniffs out 5 kilos of ganja; wrestles with escaping suspect

A female detective constable has been credited with the seizure of more than five kilogrammes of marijuana and the arrest of man who attempted to escape.

Police said during Friday December 11, 2015, a female Detective Constable was in a mini-bus on the Corentyne, Berbice, during which she got the scent of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in the vehicle.

“She requested the driver to drive the vehicle into Springlands Police Station Compound, whereupon the suspect attempted to exit the vehicle. As a result the Detective Constable was forced to physically restrain him from doing so,” the Guyana Police Force said in a statement.

The man who was later identified as Sheldon Simon, 45 years, of Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice, was arrested and 5 kilograms 470 grams of marijuana were found in his possession.

He was charged with trafficking in narcotics and appeared at the No. 51 Magistrate Court where he pleaded “not guilty” and was remanded to prison until December 29, 2015.
