One person was killed and four others seriously injured Saturday afternoon when the truck they were travelling in slammed into a tree  in the vicinity of Itaballi, Region Seven, police said.

The dead man has been identified as Jermaine Khan. The injured include Leroy Benjamin, 19-year old Damon John and 45-year old Ronald Singh of Lima, Essequibo Coast.

Singh, who sustained a broken right leg and other injuries about his body, told Demerara Waves Online News that Khan was negotiating a turn on a hillside on the Potaro Road and lost control of the truck, eventually crashing into a tree. The men were heading to Quartz Stone when tragedy struck.

The four injured persons were rushed to the Bartica Hospital and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. After travelling by boat from Bartica, they arrived at the GPHC by ambulance after 9 PM and were up to late Saturday night receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Department of the country’s main health care institution.

All of the occupants of the truck are Guyanese but, according to Singh, they work for a Russian mining company. There was no company representative present at the hospital  up to late Saturday night.
