Members of the City Constabulary and Guyana Police Force looking over the area where the box of grenades and bullets were found.

Fifteen grenades and several rounds of ammunition were Saturday afternoon discovered near the Lama Canal, Mandela Avenue/ Sheriff Street, police said.

Bomb specialists found 11 fragmentation grenades, four concussion grenades three 7.62 MM rounds and seven 9MM rounds in a small green military type box, according to a source at the scene.

Head of the Criminal Investigations Department, Senior Superintendent Wendell Blanhum told Demerara Waves Online News that the pins were removed from the grenades and that the items appeared to be in good condition.

Although that is so, he could not say whether investigators believed they were recently placed there.

Blanhum said a City Constable observed a green box, “partly covered with mud on the northern edge of the Lama Canal,” at about 2:40 PM.

The area was cordoned off and was up to late Saturday afternoon still being treated as a crime scene.

Fire fighters were called out as a precautionary measure.

The discovery of the grenades and bullets had resulted in the temporary closure of that section of Mandela Avenue/ Sheriff Street for more than two hours.
