The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuco) on Monday indicated that production was continuing to show a marginal improvement, recording the highest weekly production for the first time in six years.

“The Corporation has concluded yet another successful week of sugar production, where new records have been set on a number of estates,” the state-owned entity said in a statement.

The industry produced 10,539 tonnes of sugar for week ending September 25, 2015, the highest weekly production since March, 2009.

Ø  Skeldon factory has recorded 2,662 tonnes of sugar surpassing its previous highest of 2,502 tonnes which was achieved in October 2012.

Ø  Blairmont factory grounded for 156 hours for the week, the highest ever achieved by that location.

Ø  Uitvlugt factory produced 1,125 tonnes of sugar, recording its highest weekly production since October, 2010

Ø  Skeldon, Albion, Rose Hall and Blairmont Factories have all surpassed their revised weekly grinding hours of 135.

GuySuco promised workers at Skeldon, Albion, Rose Hall, Blairmont, East Demerara and Uitvlugt Estates that they would get a little more money to take home because those locations “have all made significant contribution in ensuring the Corporation surpassed 10,000 tonnes of sugar for the week.

“ As a result of their individual performance the workers on those locations will each be benefiting from one day weekly production incentive,” the corporation said.
As at September 28, 2015 Sugar production for the crop to date is 67,466 tonnes and 148,610 tonnes for the year to date.

Guysuco hopes to produce 227,000 tonnes of sugar this year, down from an initial target of 241,503 tonnes.
