Minister of State Joseph Harmon addressing a PNCR public meeting at the Stabroek Market on Friday, July 24, 2015.

Authorities hope that special license plates for State-owned vehicles will help them find those that might have been stolen by officials of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) administration before that party lost power two months ago.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon told ‘thank you’ public meeting by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)  at the Stabroek Market Square that the new CRG (meaning Cooperative Republic of Guyana) number plates would be part of a system to track down and pick up vehicles that have not been turned in by persons who were associated with the previous government.

“All the people who got government vehicles hiding away, lock up under house, cover down under tarpaulin and so on, we are going to get to them,” he told a poorly attended meeting at the Stabroek Market Square.

He informed the gathering that the decision by Cabinet to green-light a system in which government numbers would be assigned to all vehicles owned by the State based on records from the License Office of the Guyana Revenue Authority. “So we are going to assign Government of Guyana license plates to all of these vehicles and when that is done, anybody got dem fancy number and so on…on government vehicles, those numbers will be retired.

“So when you driving these vehicles on the road and you believe you alright, we will give the police the list so anytime you see this one pick them up, you see that one pick them up because every vehicle that is suppose to have this number got to have this (CRG) number here,” said Harmon.

Police are still probing the acquisition and attempted transfer of eight government vehicles by former Public Service Minister, Dr. Jennifer Westford to herself, her paramour and several other persons. Police said she eventually facilitated their return to the government.

He vowed that the A Partnership for National Unity+ Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition government would ensure that all the country’s resources are property would be put to use for the benefit of all Guyanese.

Government has also announced that there would be a centralized system for the manufacture of license plates rather than a ‘street-corner’ arrangement by sign artists.
