GDF Lieutenant to appeal jail term for causing death by dangerous driving

A Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant (GDF) was Tuesday sentenced to 36 months imprisonment after he was convicted for causing death by dangerous driving almost three years ago.

Lt. Anthony Eastman was found guilty of the offence that he committed on November 1, 2013 at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

City Magistrate Judy Latchman refused a bail application by the convict’s lawyer, Leslie Sobers, pending the filing of an appeal.

The prosecution’s facts were that the army officer drove motor car PPP 2210 in manager that was dangerous to the public that caused the death of Ronald Gonsalves. Eastman lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into a utility pole.

He as initially granted GUY$200,000 bail when he was arraigned.

The court heard that Gonsalves was an occupant in the car that the officer was driving.

 The Defence Lawyer asked the court to consider Eastman’s good driving record,, the vehicle was not defective and that he was not driving under the influence of alcohol.
