Wife killer found hanging in New Amsterdam Prison cell

A man, who was serving a 76-year jail term for killing his wife by poison and suffocation, was found hanging in a cell at the New Amsterdam Prison Sunday afternoon, according to police and prison sources.

Authorities identified the dead man as 27-year old Ramesh Muniram.

Investigators said he was found hanging from a rope, shortly after he was released in the recreational area for dinner. The timeline: released at 3:30 PM to have dinner; 3:35 PM returned to cell; 3:45 PM found hanging from a window at the back of the cell.

Muniram was rushed to the nearby New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was convicted and sentenced to imprisonment on October 28, 2013 for the murder of his wife, Sunita August. 

Muniram killed his wife on January 14, 2010 by giving her a poisonous substance in a Pepsi bottle to drink near the Nismes koker, West Bank Demerara. Evidence revealed that the man hid the body of the mother of three in the canal after choking her to death in that waterway. He later told her sister and mother that he had committed the heinous crime.

She had left her home at Vauxhall, Canal Number One Polder to collect money from him for two of their children.
