Fire fighters and police were Wednesday evening probing an attempted arson on one of the buildings housing the Ministry of Communities (formerly Ministry of Local Government)

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle confirmed to Demerara Waves Online News that fire fighters found a small fire on a chair and a flammable substance in a locked building. Although no smoke or flames were seen, a source said a small area of the interior wall of the building where the fire set was scorched.

Three fire tenders arrived on the scene at Fort Street, Kingston shortly after 5 PM.

Up to about 7 PM police and fire service personnel were at the scene conducting their investigation.

Police, armed with assault rifles, have been guarding several government ministries at night shortly after the May 11, 2015 general and regional elections.

Sources said intelligence gleaned by the security forces had indicated that prior to the election, the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Ministry of Finance had been prime targets for arsonists.
