The A Partnership for National Unity +Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) has a slim lead over the People’s Progressive Party  Civic (PPPC) following the release of the second set of preliminary results of the 2015 General and Regional Elections.

Of the 1,809 Statements of Poll processed countrywide,  APNU+AFC won 157,347 votes over the PPPC with 157,304.

The announcement was made by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Wednesday evening, May 13. According to the Statement of Polls already processed by the Commission, the APNU+AFC Coalition is leading the PPP/C by 43 votes, whereas on the Regional end the PPP/C is leading the Coalition by 554 votes.

In the General votes the Coalition dominated in Regions three, four, five, seven, eight and ten, while the PPP/C rose in other locations. Pertaining to the regional votes, in Districts one, two, three, five, six, eight and nine, the PPP/C was able to dominate the Coalition, but by a small increase in some of those regions.

In the meantime, the Elections Commission is still to process 490 SOPs. It was suggested that this would be completed overnight another preliminary account of result process.

GECOM Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield says the partial recounts for regions/districts 1 and 2 have been completed and the results will be relayed to the commission overnight.

The recount for region/district 8 is expected to be completed soon and the results, along with the recount results of regions/districts 1 and 2 will be reflected in another set of preliminary results of the 2015 General and Regional Elections to be provided to the public at some point tomorrow.

The PPPC requested partial recounts in the mentioned regions last evening. The APNU+AFC coalition have argued that the requests were allowed in a way that violated several points of law.

As such, its members had asked GECOM to halt the recount. This was not done, and Lowenfield was not prepared to accept that the commission followed erroneous legal advice. In fact, the CEO indicated that he and the commission stands by the advice given by its adviser.

The PPP/C has also requested partial recounts in regions 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10. Whether these requests will be favourably considered is yet to be determined. “I am not so sure at this point in time, when I engage the returning officers I will make sure that you know,” Lowenfield said.

A senior GECOM official has said that it is unlikely that the recounts for the other regions will be allowed.

At the same time, If these requests are granted GECOM will be forced to further delay the release of final results to accommodate the recount. The results of these recounts would then be either added or subtracted from the preliminary results to be provided tomorrow.
