Thirty-two-year-old Mannex Powers of Lot 102 Campbellville Housing Scheme, Georgetown, was Wednesday May 6 placed on GUY$250,000 bail for allegedly causing the death of former world champion, Andrew “Six Head” Lewis who died two days ago in a vehicular accident on the East Bank Demerara Public Road.
The Guyanese born boxing champ was killed after he reportedly swerved the bicycle he was riding into the path of the motorcar that Powers was driving.
The accused man appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry where he was arraigned for causing death by dangerous driving. Powers was represented by criminal lawyer Peter Hugh who requested bail on his behalf.
Hugh told the court that the father of four is not a flight risk and would return to court to answer the charge against him. The lawyer told the court that his client is also willing to submit his travel document to police authorities and would also subject himself to reporting to the police station if necessary.
The police prosecutor did not object to bail, but refuted claims by the lawyer that the victim had dashed in front of his client’s vehicle. The police said that they have an eyewitness whose story challenges this, but authorities are yet to take a statement from that person.
In the meantime, the court granted the accused bail and ordered him to report to the Grove Police Station on the East Bank every two weeks beginning from May 22. He is also to submit his travel document and return to court on June 2.
Forty-four-year-old Lewis is remembered as the first Guyanese to make it big on the international boxing scene. The local who once held the WBA welterweight title was said to be riding along the East Bank Public Road when the motor car heading in a southern direction collided with him before reportedly running him over.
The man suffered serious injuries about the body and was said to have been left lying on the roadway. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene but was later apprehended by police officers.
Lewis was also involved in a political dispute recently where he had to clarify that he had not endorsed a political party after he was prominently featured as supporting the political entity
