Haitian convicted for illegal entry

A Haitian, who entered Guyana illegally from neighbouring Brazil, was Tuesday fined GUY$30,000 or he would have to spend one month in jail if he fails to pay.

Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry convicted 24-year old Jonathan Joseph after he pleaded guilty to entering Guyana without presenting himself to an immigration officer.

Speaking through an interpreter, he acknowledged that between March 6 and 9 at Lethem he entered this country by crossing a land frontier and failed to report to immigration.

He was not represented by a lawyer.
