The United States (US) will Tuesday afternoon deliver 28 Guyanese deportees- the single largest number in years- to the land of their birth aboard a charter flight, Police Commissioner Seelall confirmed.

“It might be the biggest  from the US in the last many years,” he said, adding that he could not recall any being sent from as far back as 2008.

Other usually reliable sources said the MD-80 aircraft is expected to touch down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) shortly after 2 PM with the convicts.

The Police Commissioner said the deportees could be monitored in accordance with the Prevention of Crimes Act if assessments suggest that any of them should be put under surveillance. “If in the assessment of the Crime Chief they need to be monitored then we will apply for monitoring. Outside of that, it’s just intelligence,” he said.

Persaud said that the batch of deportees include those who would have committed serious offences as well as immigration violations.

Guyana and several other Caribbean countries have been begging the US to assist with the comfortable resettlement of deportees because many of them do not have any ties to their countries of birth.
