San Juan, Dec 5 (EFE).- Jamaican artists Ziggy Marley, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sean Paul and Sly & Robbie, Spicy Chocolate were announced Friday as nominees for the Grammy award for best reggae album.

The nominations demonstrate Jamaica’s supremacy in reggae, a style invented on the island in the 1960s.

Ziggy Marley, son of legendary musician Bob Marley, was nominated for his album “Fly Rasta,” which includes environmentally conscious songs such as “I Don’t Wanna Live On Mars” and of romantic nature like “You’re My Yoko”, in reference to the love between the late John Lennon and his widow, Yoko Ono.

The 78-year-old artist and producer Perry, who is recognized for his mixed sounds and special effects, received a nomination for his reggae album “Back on the Controls” for which he organized an online funding campaign to distribute the CD to his fans.

Kingston-native singer Sean Paul was nominated for his sixth album Full Frequency. Previously, he has incursioned in genres like pop, r&b and hip-hop and featured collaborations with international artists like Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, among others.

The duo Sly & Robbie, nominated for The Shaggy Reggae Power album, began making appearances on the reggae scene in the 1970s, singing and producing single records.
