The Prime Minister also appealed to the electorate to vote in a manner that will ensure that diplomatic relations with China, Venezuela and Morocco that are funding a number of projects in Dominica, an Eastern Caribbean island with a population of 71,000 persons.

Skerrit indicated that he would be banking on his administration’s track record of improved social services and investments in geo-thermal energy. He restated that France would be injecting more financing in that project that would see the English-speaking nation supplying energy to neighbouring Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Major issues include alleged corruption, drug-money for campaign financing and the state of the economy.

The UWP has reiterated its concerns about the failure of the Elections Office to re-register residents of the former British colony and issue voter identification cards.

Skerrit’s governing Dominica Labour Party won general elections in May 2005. Campaigning on a pledge to increase the minimum wage and attract foreign investment, Mr Skerrit and the DLP were re-elected by a landslide in December 2009.

The incumbent DLP has 18 seats and the UWP three.
