Flash back: President Ramotar at the recommissioning of the CIT.

Eleven days after the University of Guyana’s (UG) Centre for Information Technology (CIT) was commissioned, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) disconnected electricity supply there.

Several sources confirmed that the wires were clipped Tuesday afternoon, but the Public Relations Department appeared mum on the issue when contacted. Calls to the CIT went unanswered.

However, a senior administrative official in the Vice Chancellery confirmed that the disconnection of power but at the same time said a deal was struck was GPL. “UG has addressed the issue. Steps have been taken to address that issue with GPL,” said the official.

The cash-strapped and heavily indebted tertiary institution has been straining to pay its utility bills, taxes, social security and salaries for several years now.

GT&T has spent GUY$20 million on modernising and re-equipping the CIT with a modern network, new computers and monthly hig-speed Internet access.
