NIS Manager charged with demanding money from businessman

The Manager of the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) branch at Port Mourant has been charged with demanding money with menace from a businessman.

Miguel Anthony,44, of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo and 208 Nigg Settlement, Corentyne was granted GUY$75,000 bail and ordered to return to court on October 22, 2014.

Anthony was arrested Tuesday during a sting operation by police in Berbice.  The father of five pleaded not guilty when he appeared before New Amsterdam Magistrate, Sherdel Isaacs.

Police Prosecutor, Gordon Playter  told the court that between Sepetember 8 and 9, the NIS official demanded GUY$350,00 from businessman, Peter Lewis at Port Mourant.

Initially, the father of five was not required to plea but the Prosecutor asked that the charge be dealt with summarily. The prosecutor did not oppose bail being granted to Anthony who has been working with NIS for the past 20 years.
