More than 30 cane harvesters (cane-cutters) narrowly escaped death Saturday morning when a trailer in which they were travelling partly slid into a canal at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara.

A cane harvester said the incident occurred about 7:30 AM when the trailer ended up in a trench while crossing a bridge at the estate. The harvester said the pin that connected the trailer to the tractor eventually broke.

He said most of the workers sustained bruises, but four of his badly hurt co-workers were taken to a dispensary and the nearby Leonora Cottage Hospital. He said they were all treated and sent away.

General Secretary of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Seepaul Narine confirmed receiving a report about the incident. He said that no one was injured but they went to seek a medical check-up.
