Two persons have been arrested in connection with a spate of armed robberies in Georgetown including Monday afternoon’s gunning down of a businessman and injury to his wife, police said.

The Guyana Police Force confirmed the arrest of a “suspect” in the robbery/murder of gold miner, Ashook Ragghu of Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown. “He is in police custody assisting with the investigations,” said police spokesman, Ivelaw Whittaker.

Ragghu was shot dead about 1 PM Monday at the traffic light on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, near the Botanical Gardens. His wife sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh. A bag containing an undisclosed sum of money and a licensed firearm was taken away by the bandits.

A suspect in two armed robberies- one at Medicare’s branch on Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown earlier this year and another at Ramchand’s Auto Spares, Sheriff Street- was also arrested. Kevin Fields of Agricola, East Bank Demerara was shot dead on July 15, 2014 by the businessman outside the spares shop and a bag containing money was recovered.
