Two persons have been detained in connection with the theft of GUY$1.3 million from the Campbellville Post Office shortly after the branch was opened for business, a senior police officer said.

“We are not saying that it is they (who committed the robbery) but we are holding them to investigate,” the police officer told Demerara Waves Online News.

Meanwhile, pensioners who went to uplift monies were told to go to Kitty Post Office instead because police and postal officials were conducting investigations.

Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) spokeswoman, Telesha Whyte said shortly after 8 AM, a lone gunman entered the branch and held the Post Master and another staff member. He then snatched a bag containing the money and escaped on a motor cycle with an accomplice.

Other monies at the GPOC branch were also taken away, said Whyte.

After the men fled, employees saw the postal employees running out and shouting “thief, thief”.

Investigators believed that the men were lurking in the area and found an opportune moment to commit the robbery.
